About The Camp
The Manhattan Medical Immersion Camp, the brainchild of Dr. Marc Koch, a member of the camp’s Advisory Committee, was created to provide students with a unique opportunity to explore the broad spectrum of medical specialties and alternative fields within healthcare, including biomedical engineering and medical devices, as well as to gain hands-on experience in medicine. This immersive experience is an extension of the Orthopaedic Foundation’s signature program, Dr. for a Day, which offers students the chance to repair broken bones using synthetic cadavers and real surgical instruments.
Recognizing the importance of early exposure to medical careers, the Orthopaedic Foundation developed this program to inspire and educate the next generation of healthcare professionals. By offering interactive, hands-on learning experiences with cadavers and mentorship from experts in various medical fields, the camp aligns with the Foundation’s mission of advancing medical education. Through this initiative, students can gain a deeper understanding of careers in the medical sciences, laying a strong foundation for their future contributions to healthcare innovation, patient care, and medical advancements.
The Orthopaedic Foundation currently offers two Medical Immersion programs: the Manhattan Medical Immersion Camp for High School students and the Manhattan Medical Immersion College Cohort for undergraduate students. These one-of-a-kind, hands-on programs allow students to perform procedures on real cadavers under the tutelage of physicians from a variety of medical specialties (anesthesia, dermatology, orthopaedic surgery, vascular surgery, radiology, etc). Students will learn to perform advanced procedures such as rotator cuff repairs and total knee replacements using the same equipment that physicians use, while practicing on cadavers that are not fully embalmed in formaldehyde. In other words, the specimens are more realistic than what even medical students would train with. They will also learn about the medical device industry. This will all be under the direct supervision of board-certified surgeons. To our knowledge, this is the only program in the country, if not the world, that gives students this level of early exposure, and previous attendees have called it a life-changing experience.
